Dear Colleagues, I wish to share some updates about the literacy and numeracy screening assessments for Kindergarten to Grade 3. The next administration window is scheduled for January 13 to 31, 2025. In preparation of the administration of these screening assessments, I am pleased to share that new LearnAlberta has been updated to include new instructional videos, audio exemplars, and updated resource materials for teachers. New videos to support the administration of the PAST, RAN, and LeNS screening assessments are available to teachers in English and French. These videos include step-by-step instructions on how to administer these assessments to Kindergarten children. The videos instruct teachers about important timing limits and discontinuation rules that are applied when these screening assessments are administered, which tell the teacher to stop the task after a certain number of incorrect responses to ensure that a child or student has demonstrated their full ability. The videos also provide helpful assistance in advising teachers on how to administer the screening assessments for children and students in French language programs (francophone or French immersion). It is recommended that children in French immersion Kindergarten be assessed in English for literacy and numeracy as they tend to be in the earliest stages of learning French as an additional language. Correct responses by Kindergarten French immersion students provided in either language (English or French) can be accepted. Interventions for French immersion Kindergarten children requiring additional supports may be provided in either language (English or French), because the skills acquired will transfer across both languages. For students in grades 1 to 3, teachers should administer literacy and numeracy screening assessments to students in the primary language of instruction (English or French). Teachers will find a variety of other helpful resources on new LearnAlberta, such as the General Information Bulletin – Literacy and Numeracy Screening Assessments, which includes an updated list of government-approved screening assessments, data collection and data entry troubleshooting guides, information on access to the Teacher Dashboard, assessment norms, report interpretation videos, intervention lessons, and many more practical and helpful resources. Alberta Education continues to add resources to support teachers. I invite you to encourage teachers to visit the Provincial Assessment Hub on new LearnAlberta to access these resources. For questions about the literacy and numeracy screening assessments, please email LitNumScreening@gov.ab.ca.
Sincerely, Janet Rockwood Acting Executive Director, Provincial Assessment
