“Let the children be free; encourage them; let them run outside when it is raining; let them remove their shoes when they find a puddle of water; and when the grass of the meadows is wet with dew, let them run on it and trample it with their bare feet; let them rest peacefully when a tree invites them to sleep beneath its shade; let them shout and laugh when the sun wakes them in the morning.”

With Gratitude
As we conclude this incredible school year, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to each of you for being an integral part of our vibrant Montessori community. This year has been filled with discovery, growth, and joyful learning. It has been a privilege to watch our students develop not only academically, but also as independent thinkers, caring friends, and capable individuals.
To our parents, thank you for your continued trust and partnership in supporting your child’s journey.
To our dedicated staff, thank you for nurturing each child with patience, respect, and purpose. Every smile and kind word makes a sizable impact.
To our amazing students, thank you for a year filled with learning, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
As we move into the summer, we hope you all find time to relax and discover meaningful moments to enjoy.
Enjoy a safe and beautiful summer!
Message from the MMEC Library
Please ensure all MMEC library books are returned to the library drop box (located in the main entrance hallway) no later than Friday, June 13th. This gives us time to prepare the library for the upcoming school year and track any missing books. Please understand that families will be asked to replace or pay for any unreturned or damaged books. You can see a list of the books your child has signed out by logging in to the MMEC Family Website.
Summer Brain Drain: It’s Real!
On average, children can experience 1 to 3 months of learning loss during the summer months. We can combat this learning loss by taking advantage of everyday teachable moments and interactions. Some scheduled learning activities could even boost learning! Enjoy the following suggestions.
- Explore local parks and conservation areas.
- Daily reading practice is imperative. If your children are not yet reading, read to them. Visit the library.
- Practice number recognition and math facts.
- If you’re going on a family outing or trip, have your child keep a journal or draw pictures about their experience.
- Play board games that encourage math skills, strategic thinking, and problem-solving. Learning to “lose” also builds resilience!
- Involve children in cooking, or have older children follow a recipe.
- Discover easy home experiments with a DIY STEM kit, featuring projects like balloon rockets and vinegar and baking soda volcanoes.
- Sign up for summer camps and community activities.

Lost and Found
Items will be displayed in the main hallway from June 23 to 25. After June 26, any remaining items will be donated to our MMEC Clothing Line or a charity.
We will remind children to bring all their shoes and other belongings home during the last week of school; please help your children to remember.
Stop Saying “Good Job”
- Manipulates children. Offering a reward or threatening a punishment may get a result, but “it’s very different from working with kids.”
- Creates praise junkies. The praise makes them dependent on us. They can become less secure, always wanting someone to tell them if they are doing ok.
- Steals a child’s pleasure. We can let our child enjoy their successes by sharing with us “I did it!”, rather than them waiting for us to give them the verdict.
- Can make them lose interest. There is an impressive body of scientific research that has shown that the more we reward people for doing something, the more they tend to lose interest in whatever they had to do to get the reward.
- Can reduce achievement. Research shows that if a child is praised for a creative task, they may actually do worse at the following task. This can be because their interest and pleasure are lessened, or that they feel pressure to perform.

Public Survey to Inform the Selection and Availability of School Library Materials
The Minister of Education and Childcare recently announced that Alberta’s government is considering new standards that would provide consistent requirements for school boards in selecting and managing school library collections that include sexual content. These changes are a response to an increasing number of concerns from stakeholders, including parents, regarding the availability of explicit sexual content to students in some school libraries.
As a first step, the Minister is inviting Albertans and education partners to provide input on what they believe is acceptable for school library collections through an online survey, open until June 6, 2025. Further information, including the news release and public survey, can be found at: school library standards engagement.
The survey will be open until June 6, 2025, and is expected to take 5 to 10 minutes to complete.
