“Montessori saw education as a means whereby children might develop their personalities so as to eventually achieve a mature and independent adulthood.”

Virtual Parent Workshop on Wednesday, March 5th

Wednesday, March 5th, 6:30pm – 8pm.

WHY “FOLLOW THE CHILD” LEADS TO LEARNING AND LIFE SUCCESS

Montessori Graduates Possess Life Skills Kids in Conventional Schools Don’t Learn Maria Montessori advised us to “Follow the child.” But what does this actually mean? Stephen Hughes, a renowned pediatric neuropsychologist and ardent advocate for Montessori education, states, “Montessori education presents a radically different – and radically effective – educational approach that may be the best method we’ve got to ensure optimal cognitive, social, and emotional development of every child.” In this interactive workshop, Jonathan Wolff, international Montessori mentor and consultant, will lead a discussion on what parents can do to maximize their child’s learning and development by understanding and employing principles and practices of Montessori education at home.

Please RSVP to info@mmec.ca by March 1. The meeting link will be sent on the day of the presentation.

Class Meetings, March 11 & 12

Tuesday, March 11, and also Wednesday, March 12.

Please join your classroom Guide for an educational meeting. Guides will reach out with more details.

AEA Survey

The Alberta Education Assurance (AEA) Survey gathers feedback on the quality of education provided by school authorities and their schools. Schools and school authorities use this information to understand how they are doing and plan for the future.

The AEA survey is sent to parents or guardians of students in Grades 4-9 at MMEC. Teachers and students complete the survey online at school.

Thanks for filling out this survey! If the questions are regarding things you are unsure of (or don’t apply to our school) please mark NA.  Don’t Know is considered as a negative response whereas NA is considered not applicable and neutral.

Lost and Found

Please visit the lost and found tables in the main hallway outside the gym between March 18 and 21.  Any remaining items will be donated to charity.

“A Night in Jalisco” Social & Fundraiser: April 12

Save the Date! Our Annual Social and Fundraiser will be held on evening of April 12, 2025.

Please join us for an exciting night of food, tequila (and other drinks), and silent and live auctions at Blanco Cantina ( 8537 Broadcast Ave SW Calgary T3H 6B8 ). Funds are being raised to further enhance the Children’s Garden with more play structures and future renovation of the large play structure. Tickets and more information will be sent home in early March.

Why is Montessori so Focused on Independence?

“Educating young children is educating them for independence.”
– Maria Montessori

Nurturing independence is an aim that every parent and educator values, but it can feel like a dominant focus in Montessori practice. Why is a baby free to move on the floor rather than contained in a swing? Why is there a toddler using a real broom to sweep their classroom rather than playing with pretend toys? Why is a second grader managing their own academics rather than following the teacher? How is it possible that an adolescent has time to start their own business?

Montessori education emphasizes independence as much as the child shows interest and readiness — not at the adult’s expectation. Independence is motivated by the child’s natural drive to learn, and this drive ebbs and flows with distinct purposes over time. It’s the adult’s job to respect this drive by carefully preparing conditions which remove obstacles along the way.
