What type of natural/outdoor environment will my child have?

We have just moved to a more spacious environment at Calgary's Currie Barracks with indoor space featuring plenty of natural light and plants. Fenced off from the 30km/h traffic is an outdoor playground space for the children. As well, there is a large parade square for hard surface activities and several grassy areas for sports and creative play. The children can get outside to run safely, play games and sports, or dig in the snow.

Does MMEC have a Summer Program?

This is something that we are very interested in. We are currently in the research phase and anticipate starting a summer program to accommodate interested MMEC families for full-day care for their children over the summer months.

How many students will be accepted?

For the 2010/11 school year, we will offer half-day morning programs for three and four year olds, and full-day programs for five year olds. We will also have a full Elementary program with Grades 1 - 6. Limited spaces will be available at various age levels. Registration began January 3, 2011 and Information Sessions began January 20, 2011. Parents are encouraged to attend the earliest session possible.

Will MMEC accept applications after the school year has begun?

Yes. Children with prior Montessori experience may apply for mid-year enrollment. Children will be accepted in accordance with Montessori principles and guidelines for class structure as outlined in our Admissions Policy and Procedure, provided there is space available.

What is a modified calendar and why did MMEC adopt it?

Large blocks of uninterrupted time are integral to the Montessori educational philosophy of student choice and freedom within the prepared environment. Due to this, Montessori students happily spend a little more time in class each day than children in traditional school settings where recess and other breaks are necessary.

Over the year, the extra minutes add up, and fewer overall days are required. We are able to use this to our advantage with the addition of a Fall Break, as well as an extended Spring Break. Please see the School Year Calendar for the schedule.

Is there a lunch program?

Full-day students will eat lunch with the school staff. Please ensure you pack a nutritious lunch each day, as there is no provision for purchasing lunch. Lunch supervision is included in tuition.

Can I come and tour the school?

MMEC is proud to show parents our environment. Please note that visitors must be escorted through the school. We advise phoning ahead for an appointment to ensure that we can dedicate time to showing you our exciting environment and answering your questions.

Classroom observations must be booked in advance to ensure minimal interruption of classroom activity. At this time, as Information Sessions are scheduled and include an opportunity to view the school, please consider using these prearranged times in lieu of personal tours, as they are less disruptive to the students.

How does MMEC's tuition compare with other private Montessori schools in Calgary?

As part of our desire to be accessible to as many families as possible, MMEC is offering an elementary tuition considerably lower than other private Montessori schools in Calgary.

In the first year of operations, private schools do not receive any funding from Alberta Education. We did not want first year families to be penalized with the additional cost of $3,200 per student, therefore, we have distributed the first year's funding shortfall over five years. A large focus this year will be on soliciting corporate and private donations to assist us in offsetting this expense. Perhaps you would like to help our fundraising team!

Will MMEC be offering a tuition discount to siblings?

For families with more than one child actively enrolled in the school, the first child is standard rate, and each additional child receives a $200.00 discount. This discount can be applied to the first payment.
