Curriculum

Our Guides offer curriculum that presents the Alberta Program of Studies in a very meaningful, contextualized way, using the Montessori lessons as the framework. These lessons present all learning from the “big picture”, global perspective first, then proceed to examine the “parts”, always returning to the view of the “whole”. The spiral offers an effective metaphorical image of the Montessori approach to learning: concepts are presented from whole to part to whole.

Children in their third year of Casa (age five) stay for a full day. In Alberta, the government funds half a day (“Kindergarten”) provided the school meets Alberta Program of Studies criteria. Children stay in the same classroom, with the same guide for continuity, and continue to receive lessons in the same manner. In addition to the Casa Curriculum, please see Cosmic Education and the Alberta Program of Studies below for further details.

The following document outlines how Maria Montessori Education Centre meets and exceeds the Alberta Program of Studies in the “Kindergarten”, and Lower and Upper Elementary programs through Montessori lessons and methods.
